Introduction
Sheyla S. Zandonai is an anthropologist of global systems, city governance, urban history and modernity, and Portuguese colonialism in the Far East, with focus on Macau. Trained in France, she holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Social Anthropology and Ethnology from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Zandonai’s research interests are wide-ranging with most of her academic publications centered on the field of Macau studies, covering topics of global and material history, European urbanism, colonial nostalgia, postcoloniality and belonging, contested heritages, and gambling urbanization. Her work has been funded by grants and fellowships awarded by the International Institute of Asian Studies (IIAS), Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Society for East Asian Anthropology (SEAA), Academia Sinica, University of Macau, Macau Foundation, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), and the Università Degli Studi di Torino.
